In a city centre that has seen umpteen comings and goings in the culinary world over recent years, it’s wonderful to behold one institution that is a bastien of quality and tradition.Sam’s Chop House is a much loved restaurant and that was amply demonstrated in 2009 when it received the accolade Best Overall Restaurant at the Hi-Life Dining Awards.Few dining rooms evoke the wonderful club like atmosphere that is Sam’s signature just as much as its dishes including slow-cooked rabbit leg - cured with bay leaves, garlic, Maldon sea salt and thyme. Cooked for four hours at a gentle heat to tenderise the meat and served with crushed new potatoes, creamed spinach and a delightful sweet apple sauce.In this modern world of flan and flannel it’s splendid to behold somewhere of the enduring substance that is Sam’s.

" First visit here and when we booked for 7.30pm were politely asked if we could arrive later at 8pm because a large party were also arriving at 7.30, we agreed. Upon arrival we were surprised to see the place full to bursting with people 3 deep at the bar, however we found a waitress and were escorted to our reserved table. The atmosphere was noisy and boisterous with a party of 30 or so having a great time. We ordered a bottle of excellent wine, and for starters I had a hearty brown onion soup. My wife had the black pudding starter, which was well presented if a little small on portion size but of excellent quality and flavour. The large party left as we were half way through our starters and we could finally hear ourselves speak. For our mains my wife chose the sea bass and I chose the duo of lamb, full marks for both – flavourful, well designed dishes – we both left clean plates. Desserts of almond cake and home-made chocolate ice-cream, were both very good, the ice-cream being the best I have tasted in a long time - very creamy. We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Sam’s appears to be a very popular party venue which may not suite everyone if you are there when a party in full swing. "
